What happens to my Social Security disability benefits when I reach retirement age?

When you reach your Social Security normal retirement age, then your disability benefits are simply converted into retirement benefits. You no longer receive Social Security Disability, you receive full retirement benefits. One interesting note is that if you're receiving early retirement benefits and you're disabled, you may want to apply for disability benefits because then your benefits could be converted to full disability and then at retirement age you could be converted to full retirement and you take away that early retirement penalty.
