Greene County, MS – An 18-wheeler overturned on Wednesday, leaking the contents of its freight onto US 98, causing law enforcement to reroute traffic around the contaminated area. According to Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP), the accident resulted when the driver left his lane, entered the shoulder of the roadway, and lost control of the vehicle. Reportedly, the driver believes a blown-out tire is responsible, but has not yet confirmed the cause.
The tanker contained trimethlamine anhydrous, a highly flammable and toxic chemical. Eastbound traffic has been diverted to Hwy 57, and westbound traffic is being rerouted to Hwy 63, as officials continue to remove the hazardous substance. No injuries have been reported in connection with the accident.
