Starting June 2, 2025, Pensacola International Airport (PNS) is rolling out a new initiative that could make travel significantly more accessible for individuals living with invisible disabilities. The airport has officially joined the global Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program, a voluntary system that helps travelers who may need additional time, support, or understanding while navigating the airport.
At Ortiz Law Firm, we’re proud to see our hometown airport take this inclusive step. As a disability law firm that works with clients facing mental health conditions, neurological disorders, and other life-altering impairments, we understand the challenges of living with a hidden disability.
What Is the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program?
Originally developed at London’s Gatwick Airport in 2016, the program has expanded across the globe and now operates in over 330 airports, 22 airlines, and countless businesses, hospitals, and government offices. The concept is simple but powerful. individuals with invisible disabilities can discreetly signal that they may need extra patience, assistance, or flexibility by wearing a sunflower-patterned lanyard.
Common invisible disabilities include:
- Autism
- ADHD
- Chronic pain or fatigue
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Sensory processing disorders
- Anxiety and PTSD
- Vision or hearing loss
- Neurological conditions, such as multiple sclerosis or epilepsy
Recognizing the lanyard allows airport staff to provide a more compassionate and personalized service without requiring individuals to explain their condition or limitations.
How It Works at PNS
As of June 2, 2025, travelers at Pensacola International Airport can pick up a free Sunflower lanyard at the airport’s Information Desk. Airport employees and partner organizations have undergone training to recognize the lanyard and respond with appropriate support. This could mean offering clearer instructions, allowing more time to get through security, or simply approaching with a bit more patience and empathy.
Why This Matters to Our Clients
Many of our clients have disabilities that aren’t visible to the casual observer. Insurance companies may minimize or deny their long-term disability claims for this very reason. Programs like the Sunflower Initiative are a powerful reminder that a disability can be real and serious even if it isn’t visible.
If you live with fibromyalgia, chronic migraines, post-concussion syndrome, anxiety, or another invisible condition, the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program can help reduce travel stress and ensure you are treated with dignity.
We Applaud This Step Toward Accessibility
We commend Pensacola International Airport for joining the global Sunflower network and making our city more inclusive for everyone, residents and travelers alike. This is a meaningful win for those who too often feel overlooked or misunderstood in public spaces.
